Who conducts GPAT now

NBEMS conducts GPAT. The NBEMS GPAT page states that AICTE ran the test from 2010 to 2018 and NTA ran it from 2019 to 2023. After a Supreme Court judgment dated 5 March 2020, which said pharmacy would be removed from AICTE's mandate and governed by the Pharmacy Act, 1948, PCI took up GPAT. PCI then signed an MoU with NBEMS to conduct it.

The 2026 bulletin limits NBEMS to conducting the exam, declaring the result and handing the result to PCI. NBEMS has no role in counselling or in paying the scholarship. That matters for students who search an NTA website out of habit: the official GPAT page is on natboard.edu.in.

GPAT 2027 dates and schedule

No GPAT 2027 bulletin, application window or exam date is published. The NBEMS GPAT page lists 2026 as its latest cycle, and the NBEMS notice board shows no GPAT 2027 notice as of 31 October 2026. Any page quoting a firm 2027 date is not quoting NBEMS.

The 2026 timeline is the only official reference. It is shown here for planning, not as the 2027 schedule.

04

Eligibility

These are the 2026 rules from the information bulletin. The 2027 bulletin may change them.

  • The candidate must be a citizen of India.
  • The candidate must hold a B.Pharm degree (four years after 10+2, lateral entry students included) from a recognised university, or an equivalent qualification.
  • Final-year (fourth-year) B.Pharm students could appear if their result would be declared before M.Pharm admission for 2026-27.
  • Pre-final-year (third-year) students could also appear if their final-year result would be declared before M.Pharm admission for 2027-28.
  • B.E. or B.Tech (Pharmaceutical and Fine Chemical Technology) candidates were not eligible.

The eligibility chapter lists no age limit. An admit card is provisional, and a candidate found ineligible at any stage loses the result and the candidature. The bulletin also says appearing in GPAT gives no automatic right to an M.Pharm seat or a scholarship.

05

Exam pattern

GPAT 2026 was a single-session computer-based test with multiple-choice questions, each with four options, in English only. The paper ran from 9:00 am to 12:00 noon, with 180 minutes allotted.

Key details
Subject group (2026)QuestionsMarks
Pharmaceutical Chemistry and allied subjects38152
Pharmaceutics and allied subjects38152
Pharmacognosy and allied subjects1040
Pharmacology and allied subjects28112
Other subjects of the B.Pharm course1144
Total125500

A correct answer earns 4 marks. An incorrect answer costs 1 mark, which the bulletin calls 25% negative marking. An unattempted question scores zero.

The paper is split into timed sections. The bulletin gives an example of five sections with 25 questions and 36 minutes each, and says the real number of sections can vary. A candidate cannot move ahead until a section's time ends, and cannot go back to it afterwards. The syllabus follows the subjects in the B.Pharm Course Regulations, 2024.

06

How GPAT scores are used

GPAT feeds two things: M.Pharm admission and the M.Pharm scholarship. NBEMS hands the result to PCI. Counselling and admission are run by the relevant state authority or admission committee, and that body checks documents and eligibility at that stage. Students from Hyderabad should read the Telangana admission notice for their year, because each state sets its own M.Pharm process.

The scholarship needs a careful read, because two official sources describe it differently. AICTE's student schemes page lists a PG Scholarship for full-time GATE and GPAT qualified students admitted to M.Pharm courses in AICTE-approved institutions, at Rs 12,400 a month. AICTE's general instructions add conditions. GPAT candidates must join a pharmacy programme, part-time courses do not qualify, the admission must fall inside the GPAT validity period, and payment runs for at most 24 months or until the course or thesis is completed. The newest notification on AICTE's PG scholarship page is for 2024-25, and the page carries no date.

The 2026 GPAT bulletin, on the other hand, says PCI took the initiative to conduct GPAT and pay the scholarship after the 2020 judgment. Check the current notice and your admitting college before counting on a figure. The 2027 amount is not announced.

07

How to prepare

Start with the weightage. Pharmaceutical Chemistry and Pharmaceutics together carry 76 of the 125 questions, which is 304 of 500 marks. Pharmacology adds 28 questions. Pharmacognosy has only 10.

Plan around the negative marking. With four options, a blind guess has an expected value of plus 0.25 marks (a one-in-four chance of 4 marks against a three-in-four chance of losing 1). Once you can rule out even one option, guessing pays better. The timed sections, though, mean a long hunt for one answer costs the whole block.

Practise on a computer, in 36-minute blocks if the 2027 bulletin keeps that format. Revise from your own B.Pharm notes against the 2024 regulations, since the syllabus is defined by them.

08

Common mistakes

  • Waiting for a third-party site to confirm dates instead of watching natboard.edu.in.
  • Treating the 2026 eligibility rules as the 2027 rules.
  • Entering the Aadhaar number carelessly. In 2026 it could not be edited once submitted.
  • Uploading an old photograph. The 2026 bulletin asked for a photo no more than three months old.
  • Assuming a scholarship amount quoted on a coaching page is current.

09

What to do next

Check the GPAT page on natboard.edu.in and the NBEMS notice board each week until the 2027 bulletin appears. In the 2026 cycle, applications opened on 23 December 2025. NBEMS has not said when the 2027 window will open. Keep your B.Pharm marksheets, ID and a recent photo ready.
