JEE Main 2027 dates and schedule

NTA issued the Session 1 public notice on 24 October 2026, and the 2027 information bulletin is on its site. The bulletin also lists a tentative Session 2 schedule, and NTA says a separate notice will open Session 2 applications. A student can apply for Session 1 only, pay that session's fee, and apply for Session 2 later using the same application number.

The bulletin's dates table has no result date for either session. It does say the Common Rank List is compiled and declared after Session 2. All application windows close at 11:50 pm on the last day.

On 30 October 2026 NTA clarified that a candidate who made a mistake can submit a fresh Session 1 form, even after paying. Only the last form with a paid fee and a generated confirmation page counts, the earlier fee is not refunded, and a new application number is issued. NTA recommends the correction window for small changes instead.

03

Who can apply for JEE Main 2027

There is no age limit. The rule is based on the year of Class XII. Candidates who passed Class XII or an equivalent exam in 2025 or 2026, or who appear in 2027, are eligible. Those who passed in 2024 or earlier are not. The passing year is the year the result was first declared as pass, so a later improvement attempt does not reset it.

The bulletin accepts the final exam of the 10+2 system from a recognised Central or State board, NIOS with at least five subjects, a three-year diploma recognised by AICTE or a State board, Cambridge A level and the IB Diploma, among others. The State of eligibility is the State where the candidate passed Class XII, not the family's home State.

NTA only conducts the test. Each admitting institute sets its own criteria, so check JoSAA, CSAB or the institute before assuming a seat is open to you.

Fee for Paper 1 per session, centres in India, from the 2027 bulletin (processing charges and GST are extra):

JEE Main 2027 exam pattern

Paper 1 has two sections in each subject. Section A holds 20 multiple-choice questions and Section B holds 5 questions whose answers are typed in as an integer, rounded to the nearest integer, on an on-screen keypad. Every question is worth 4 marks for a correct answer, minus 1 for a wrong one, and 0 if left blank. That applies to both sections.

Key details
PaperPartsQuestionsMarksDuration
Paper 1 (BE/BTech)Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, each 20 MCQ + 5 numerical753003 hours
Paper 2A (BArch)Mathematics 25, Aptitude 50, Drawing 2774003 hours
Paper 2B (BPlanning)Mathematics 25, Aptitude 50, Planning 251004003 hours

A candidate who takes both Paper 2A and Paper 2B sits 3 hours 30 minutes. For Paper 2A and 2B, Mathematics carries 100 marks, the Aptitude Test 200, and the Drawing Test or the planning questions 100. The BArch drawing test is done offline on an A4 drawing sheet. Everything else is computer-based. Three-hour papers run from 9:00 am to 12:00 noon or 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm.

Students aiming at architecture can also read the NATA exam guide, since NATA is the other aptitude route to BArch.

05

Syllabus

NTA published the JEE Main 2027 syllabus in October 2026. For Paper 1 it lists 14 units in Mathematics, 20 in Physics and 20 in Chemistry, split into physical, inorganic and organic. Mathematics runs from sets and functions through calculus, coordinate and three-dimensional geometry, vectors, statistics and trigonometry. Physics includes an Experimental Skills unit, and Chemistry includes a unit on principles related to practical chemistry, so lab work is examinable.

Students can strengthen weak units with approved maths tutors, physics tutors or chemistry tutors in Hyderabad, or online from anywhere in India.

06

JEE Main and JEE Advanced

JEE Main Paper 1 is also the eligibility test for JEE Advanced, which leads to the IITs. The 2027 bulletin says candidates should be among the top 2,50,000 successful candidates, all categories included, in Paper 1 of JEE Main 2027. For anything beyond that figure, the JEE Advanced site is the authority.

The JEE Advanced site still shows 2026 pages. In the 2026 cycle the exam was held on 17 May 2026, with IIT Roorkee as organising institute, and the 2026 rules allowed a maximum of two attempts in two consecutive years. The 2027 exam date, organising institute and eligibility criteria are not yet announced as of 31 October 2026.

NITs, IIITs and other centrally funded technical institutions admit through JoSAA or CSAB using the JEE Main Common Rank List. IITs use JEE Advanced ranks through JoSAA.

For candidates who sit both sessions, NTA takes the better of the two total NTA scores, not the best subject scores from each. The Common Rank List and category ranks follow from that.

07

How to prepare for JEE Main 2027

Start from the NTA syllabus PDF and mark each unit as strong, shaky or untouched. Each subject carries 100 marks, so a weak subject costs as much as a strong one gains.

Practise the numerical section on its own. There are no options to eliminate, the answer must be an integer, and a wrong answer still costs 1 mark. Get used to typing answers with the mouse on the virtual keypad, because that is how the real test works.

Solve full papers against the clock. The NTA site hosts the Paper 1 question papers from several April 2026 shifts, which gives official practice material. Attempt one paper a week, then spend a separate sitting reviewing every wrong answer and every lucky guess.

Plan around two sessions. Session 1 in January is a first look at the paper, and Session 2 in April is a second chance, with the better total score counting. A student who is not ready by January can skip it, since appearing in both sessions is optional.

Students in Hyderabad who want a structured plan can look at JEE tutors in Hyderabad. Another entrance test many JEE aspirants add is covered in the BITSAT exam guide.

08

Common mistakes

Filing more than one application is the biggest registration risk. NTA treats appearing under more than one application number as unfair means. Holding two numbers without using both is not treated that way, but only the last paid form counts.

Name and date of birth must match the Class 10 certificate. NTA's 28 October 2026 advisory also asks candidates to log in with their own DigiLocker, JanParichay or e-Pramaan credentials, and to do Re-KYC through DigiLocker before filling the form.

Choosing the question paper language carelessly is another slip. The medium cannot be changed after the correction window closes. Candidates in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh can pick English with Telugu.

In the exam, the usual slip is guessing freely because the paper feels long. Each wrong answer costs 1 mark in both sections, and numerical answers must be rounded to the nearest integer before typing.

09

What to do next

Check your Class XII year first. If it is 2025, 2026 or 2027, read the full bulletin on the NTA site and finish Session 1 registration by 22 November 2026, or by 26 November with the late fee.

Frequently asked questions

When is JEE Main 2027 Session 1?

NTA's bulletin lists Session 1 for 20, 21, 22, 23, 24 and 28 January 2027. Applications run from 24 October to 22 November 2026, and admit cards are due on 13 January 2027.

Is there an age limit for JEE Main 2027?

No. NTA applies no age limit. The test is open to candidates who passed Class XII or an equivalent exam in 2025 or 2026, or who appear in 2027. Individual institutes may have their own age rules for admission.

Is there negative marking in JEE Main Paper 1?

Yes. Paper 1 awards 4 marks for a correct answer, deducts 1 mark for a wrong answer and gives 0 for an unanswered question. This applies to both the multiple-choice section and the numerical-answer section.

Is JEE Main compulsory for JEE Advanced?

Yes. The JEE Main 2027 bulletin says candidates should be among the top 2,50,000 successful candidates in Paper 1 to appear in JEE Advanced 2027. The JEE Advanced 2027 date and full eligibility criteria are not yet announced as of 31 October 2026.

Can I take both sessions of JEE Main 2027?

Yes, but you do not have to. A candidate can apply for Session 1 now and apply for Session 2 later using the same application number. If you appear in both, NTA uses the better of your two total NTA scores.

Can I write JEE Main in Telugu?

Yes. NTA offers English and Telugu question papers at centres in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. The paper appears in both English and your chosen language, and the English version prevails if the two differ.
